The origin of New Year's resolutions Multiple sources claim that the traditions of New Year's resolutions were first created by the ancient Babylonians during the festival of Akitu. This was a religious celebration during which there was the planting of new crops, the crowning of a new king and made promises to the Gods. It was believed that if they kept their promises they would be looked upon with favour by the Gods and that breaking them brought misfortune. The tradition continued and was popular amongst the ancient Romans, early Christians, knights in the Middle Ages and is still followed today.
